Trump Repeatedly Refers to Greenland as Iceland in Speech Vowing Takeover (truthout.org)

by
floofloof@lemmy.ca

President Donald Trump repeatedly referred to Greenland as “Iceland” during his speech at the World Economic Forum on Wednesday, even as he demanded that the U.S. be handed ownership of the territory. When the president initially raised Greenland, which he said he was originally “going to leave … out of the speech,” he referred to it correctly. He issued veiled threats to Denmark…

The Great Crime Decline Is Happening All Across the Country | Even cities with understaffed police departments have made record gains. (theatlantic.com)

by
silence7@slrpnk.net

There are many plausible explanations for the recent crime downturn: sharper policing strategy, more police overtime, low unemployment, the lure of digital life, the post-pandemic return to normalcy. Each of these surely played a role. But only one theory can match the decline in its scope and scale: that the massive, post-pandemic investment in local governments deployed during the Biden administration, particularly through the American Rescue Plan Act, delivered a huge boost to the infrastructure and services of American communities—including those that suffered most from violent crime. That spending may be responsible for our current pax urbana

The High Court Sinks Trump’s Federal Reserve Ploy (prospect.org)

by
Tony Bark@pawb.social

The Supreme Court today signaled that it would not allow Trump to fire Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook, as conservative justices sided with the Court’s three liberals. Allowing Trump to fire Cook based on flimsy evidence in the absence of a hearing, Justice Kavanaugh said, would “weaken, if not shatter, the independence of the Federal Reserve.”

The memo, signed by the acting director of ICE, Todd Lyons, and dated May 12, 2025, says: “Although the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has not historically relied on administrative warrants alone to arrest aliens subject to final orders of removal in their place of residence, the DHS Office of the General Counsel has recently determined that the U.S. Constitution, the Immigration and Nationality Act, and the immigration regulations do not prohibit relying on administrative warrants for this purpose.”

Every year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, elected officials quote King while standing safely at a distance from the risks he embraced. What we rarely confront is this truth: Martin Luther King Jr. was not merely misunderstood in his time.
